Bumblebees

R & R in January...No, not Rest & Recuperation for the Horde but rather Recording & Research.

If you are able to help with this it would be much appreciated.

I mentioned to Dr David Sheppard, our Natural History 'consultant', that we seem to have quite a number of

bumblebees about at present. This is in of itself quite interesting and worth recording, but David is particularly interested to know whether the bees are collecting pollen. If they are, the pollen can clearly be seen on their back legs.(We already have one exciting record for a garden in East Keal)

Why is this of interest and import?

Pollen gathering at this time of year would indicate that the Bumblebee nest has survived and that there is a brood which needs to be fed. This is very unusual and in terms of county records is very important.

The bumblebee you are likely to be seeing is the Buff-tailed Bombus terrestris - see photo.

Not Bombus terrestris? Then please make a note of its tail colour. Photos are always appreciated...

If whilst sitting in your deckchair with a Pimms, you do spot any bumblebees, please let me know.

Date and place needed for a record.

For those of an adventurous nature, following the bumblebee back to its nest and recording the location would earn an extra gold star

I look forward to hearing from you..

Best wishes,

Denise
